Who is Ta-Nehisi Coates? And why is he taking over Black and White America alike? Well first, let’s start by making sure you know how to pronounce this man’s name. Tah-Nuh-Hah-See Coats is how you say it. Now, who is he? Ta-Nehisi Coates, born on September 30th, 1975 in Baltimore, Maryland, is one of America’s most compelling voices to shake the foundation on which white privilege stands on. His voice is timely and provocative, and it’s one that needs to be appreciated for what it is; raw. Coates is not afraid to talk about race, or the dark and shameful history of this country. Coates is very socially and politically conscious, much accredited to his upbringings in the Mondawmin area of Baltimore, and his time at Howard University. He is a national correspondent for The Atlantic, and he has published many writings for many prestigious publications such as, The Village Voice, Time, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. He has published two books, the first being The Beautiful Struggle, and the second being the nationally-recognized Between the World and Me. Between the World and Me has been praised and awarded by whites and blacks alike, even going on to win the 2015 National Book Award for Non-Fiction. It was even praised by literary giant Toni Morrison, who even went as far to say Coates has filled the void left by James Baldwin (one of the greatest American writers, and one of the first writers to break literary ground by talking about race and the black experience). Between the World and Me is written as an open letter to his son, Samori, much like James Baldwin’s Letter to my Nephew, which was written by Baldwin to his nephew. Between the World and Me is relevant and needed in the society we live in. We need authors like Coates, who will unapologetically tell you how it is. Coates will tackle race and the experience of being black in America. He will explain blackness and whiteness, and his tone can make you uncomfortable, and it will seem to challenge your way of life, and it can make your blood boil, but in the same sentence he will make you say “Okay, I get it.” Coates puts things into perspective, and gives a voice to a community that feels like their voice can’t properly be heard. Ta-Nehisi Coates is the gifted, and rebellious voice America needs right now. Coates will speak his truth in this book and he is 100% authentic in the way he spreads light on topics that have spent too much time in the dark.
